Can I use hydroponics to keep my turtle tank clean?
I have 2 red-eared sliders and the water gets complicated quickly. I have 505 filter does a decent job, usually, but over time the cleaning needs parts replaced. I wondered if I could use the dirty water turtle to feed the plants through a hydroponic system, and instead, keep the water a little cleaner. I would go for design, where the water is pumped through a tray or tube with the roots hanging in the constant current. In this way, all you have to feed water into the filter directly to the plants, then the water plants go back into the tank. Sounds like a simple configuration, I wonder if Turtle poop and food pellets remains that make good plant food.
Yes, this could work well. Turtle poop and food remains would be an excellent fertilizer for plants and hydroponics has been combined with aquaculture before, too. Here's how it would work on an industrial scale: http://jeq.scijournals.org/cgi/content/full/33/2/695

Can grow cactus plants in the water?
I read book by Richard Nicholls on hydroponics that can achieve extraordinary results by cactus growing in the water! Has anyone tried this?
Plants can be grown with a sterile material base of gravel or aggregate vermiculite which supports the plant, but allows free flow of water and root movement. This is in a pot with slotted wide. These vessels inside established in pots or trays outside waterproof raincoats. The roots of a plant grown water are different from those grown in soil. Plants grown in soil that for a period of four to six months, develop the roots of water needed to grow hydroponically. Cascade, including the disintegration of old roots that must be rinsed, gently.
